Hindsight.

OffCut1.png

Hindsight is a project discussing ideas of nostalgia and the home throughout life. Looking back upon the past we often romanticise what we see; hindsight allows us to recognise the value of what we experienced and how it shaped us. Home is often a feeling rather and a specific place, it is intrinsic. This project aims to explore how the idea of the home changes and develops over time. There are multiple locations across my life which I have grown to consider my home, the feeling transcends border and physical distance. By re appropriating old family photos this project invites the viewer into familial scenes across multiple places, hoping to instill a sense of nostalgia in the audience. The physical form of the works emulates the familiar sight of a framed photo displayed in one’s home encouraging the viewer to think of their past and their childhood.

However, nothing is static and as we age, we are presented with a choice. We must choose our own path and progress. We will always consider one place home, but life will often lead us away and we are forced to make new connections. This choice is something that I took inspiration from as well. The physical separation of the cut-out form and the wavering possibilities presented by the many paths features encapsulates the overwhelming ambiguity of having to leave the places we considered home and make a life for ourselves. While we forge our new path the places that we knew will not wait for us, their change is inevitable too, places we once knew intimately will change and leave us with only the memories of what once was.

This project encourages the viewer to consider their past, how their life has changed and how our idea of the home has progressed over time

To evoke feelings of the family and the domestic, the series was presented in found picture frames taken from places which I would consider home. I believe this provides a more interesting visual aesthetic than the usual plain colour frames while always linking in to and enhancing the themes of the family and home discussed in my work.
